The Region increased recovery and recycling to save raw materials and reduce energy costs (17/11/2011)

The Murcia region has increased the recovery, reuse and recycling of waste materials in 2010 so they can be reused repeatedly or in other consumable products, which "saves raw materials and reduce energy and water spending," according said today the Minister of Presidency, Manuel Campos.

The head of the Ministry of the Presidency presented today, with the mayor of Beniel, Roberto García Navarro, the "Hall of Nature ', which, through environmental education initiatives, fosters an attitude of respect for the environment and enhances the awareness for the problems of the environment.

The recovery and utilization of waste, new technologies, "a source of wealth for the regional economy," and obtained "a multitude of benefits such as decreased use of raw materials, natural resources and waste generation also added to prevent contamination to the environment, "said Campos.

The Minister stressed the importance of raising awareness about recycling, installing more containers and construction of facilities for the collection and sorting of packaging, as the tools necessary to encourage the active participation of society Murcia.

Recycling in the Region

The Minister acknowledged the "efforts and interests" of citizens by improving and protecting the environment, which has yielded a "positive" results during 2010, a period in which the regional recycling figures were above the average and exceeding national targets set by the European Union.

Last year, citizens placed more than 13,200 tons in the yellow containers, for plastics and metals.

Plastic packaging is recycled a 53.2 percent versus 45.3 percent of the national average and 22.5 per cent required by the European Union, while metal containers stood at 74.9 percent , three points above the national rate and well above the EU target of 50 percent.

Containers of paper and cardboard collected 19,000 tonnes, with a recycle over 80 percent, marking high value by the EU (60 percent).

Citizens left 20,600 tons in the different collection infrastructure in the region, which has led to a mean of 14.1 kilos recycled glass for Murcia.

The containers for the recycling of batteries and waste oil were collected over 7.5 tonnes and 109 tonnes respectively.

The Community has the widest network of eco-parks nationwide with a total of 69 eco-parks distributed throughout the region (41 fixed and 28 mobile) for the collection of any type of waste, from electronics to furniture, empty paint cans .

In them, every 2.2 kilos of recycled Murcia this waste in 2010, in which these points exceeded 3,200 tons, which represents nearly 400 more than last year.

Environmental Education

Nature's Classroom, located at the Ecopark Beniel, has facilities equipped with educational material to promote, through environmental education programs, knowledge of the natural environment to children and adolescents and to foster attitudes of respect for the environment.

The environmental education program, to be held between January and June this year, is targeted at students in sixth grade and fourth grade Elementary Secondary Education of all schools in the locality.

Students conduct outdoor activities to maintain direct contact with nature and raise awareness, educate and engage the younger audience with environmental problems and their solution.
